Improving Education

Dr. Baeza's Priorities for Improving Schools in AUHSD

1.   Effective Governance

  • A school board member must understand the processes by which its work is framed and governed.  These processes are being disregarded for the advancement of member interests or political alliances.

  • Ensure accountability to the public for the District’s performance while managing with integrity and transparency.

  • Responsive to community and staff complaints inside and outside of Board meetings.

  • Respect for protocols and uses own knowledge and experience to serve a governing board member and reach best decisions based on best interests of students and staff.

  • Continue to reflect on own performance and self-evaluate within the protocols established for the particular board.

  • Read, view and listen to many different community voices and information sources to become a champion for public school students and public education

2.  Closing the Achievement Gap

  • Know who our students are and ensure that the services they require are available with equity.

  • Continue to set the proper direction for Common Core by looking closely at the instructional materials available for adoption over the next few years.  Teachers need the proper support and curriculum to efficiently implement these new academic standards.

  • Offer English Learner students the high quality academic instruction and supports required to transition to English proficient.

  • Students must be prepared to enter the workforce and/or college after graduating from AUHSD.

  • Providing adequate and modern technology to ensure that students are ready to meet the demands of a modern and global economy.

  • Professional development for teachers should be relevant and based on teachers meeting needs of students.

3.  School Funding

  • Implementation of Local Control Funding Formula should be guided by a clear district vision based on data and developed in authentic collaboration with teachers, parents, and other community leaders.

  • Channel more money to classrooms where students and teachers are.

  • Construct and modernize school facilities as board’s commitment to our students.

  • Upgrade school structures to meet the needs of 21st century preparedness.

  • Research and consider alternative funding measures or programs to subsidize programs that enrich and offer a holistic education.

4.  Improve overall school conditions for students.

  • Safe and supportive learning environments free from bullying, decrease chronic absenteeism, and increase drop-out prevention.

  • Increased parent and community engagement

  • Consider physical health and wellness initiatives

  • Measures to ensure access to responsive school environments for specific student populations, i.e. foster and homeless youth, students of color, low-income students, and English language learners.
